OK, so it was not that long ago that I joined Substack full of joy and hope. I dreamed of sharing with everyone my lustrous journey to becoming a screenwriter. Well, I aint there just yet, folks….
While I have been away from you all I have been doing evening classes at the wonderful City Lit and met some great people there. I have been making reasonable progress on my scripts and also got another teaching gig so that I can afford to keep it all together at home. I am in a kind of ‘self-help group’ for writers and we meet up once or twice a month to share our work. It’s an amazing group of wonderful and supportive fellow travellers: Hiya, Jane’s Table Toppers!
So far, so good. But then I did also drop out of the MA as I mentioned in a previous post and I am missing belonging to a community of writers in that kind of setting. So I am writing to let you know that I am back in the game….
From September I will be studying Scriptwriting at the University of East Anglia and am very excited to be joining the course there. I am looking forward to meeting some interesting people and doing great work.
I am going to be working super hard to stay on track and keep writing all the time. I am still doing my teaching and working with my wonderful students — I need to pay the bills after all. But reaffirming my commitment to screenwriting and I hope you will all help and support me as I endeavour to Dance my Best Dance.
Let me know in the comments below about your experiences of studying scriptwriting. How have classes helped you (or not)? Do you need to have people to share work with? Do you get fed up with having to give feedback to other writers? Really interested to learn from experienced and novice scriptwriters about the role of formal education in their development.
Keep on doing what you do best,
Jane.
Hey Jane
So glad you’re back in the saddle! I’ve never done screenwriting before. Will you be communicating to the UEA? X
Sorry I meant commuting!!
